Saverio Truglia hosts contest and exhibit “Test Shot: Unintended Portraits”

Photographer Saverio Truglia will host “Test Shot: Unintended Portraits”, a competition and print exhibit of test shots that celebrates the images that “missed the mark and was until now, unworthy of display”. Saverio was inspired to create the competition from his past experiences entering other contests. He took some time to answer a few questions on how the competition and exhibit came to be.

What was the inspiration behind the contest element of Test Shot: Unintended Portraits?

“This show is a true reversal of all photo competitions I enter. The idea is to liberate photographers from needing to constantly appear so hyper-polished and to celebrate the very sloppy process by which we become professionals. There are real benefits to having a sense of humor about you.”

The “Unintended” aspect is very unique. How did you come up with that idea?

“I believe that as photographers, we are our edit. This show encourages people to go back and notice what might be overlooked. Personally I’ve discovered lots of my iconic images by going back to a shoot long past.”

How did you get the impressive jury panel?

“It’s still a competition so I wanted to incentive entry by including a range of photography tastemakers to jury. I only asked people I knew personally to be on the jury panel. They’re all on top of their game in areas of fine art, publishing, advertising and editorial photography.”

Sandro directs “Got Chocolate Milk” TV commercial

Sandro recently directed a TV commercial for the “Got Chocolate Milk” campaign featuring Hines Ward with his ”My After” drink of choice. The “my After” campaign highlights the importance of refueling after a workout, with chocolate milk being the preferred post-workout ritual for athletes.

Sandro recapped on the day: “Working with legendary executive creative director and the creator of the “Got Milk” campaign Bernie Hogya of Deutch NY was a joy. Hines Ward gave eleven hours of non-stop high-powered workouts on a very cold wet day. The day was brutal but in the end we finished two prints ads and a lovely thirty second spot for “My After” campaign. Chocolate milk was the drink of the day for all of us”.

‘Chicago Confluence’ by Sandro on exhibit at Willis Tower

Congratulations to Sandro on his current installation of “Chicago Confluence” at the Willis Tower in Chicago. Curated by Robert O’Connell of O’Connell International Advisors, Inc., the exhibition includes 38 prints in addition to a 25′ x 25′ grid of 25 portraits, “Euphoria”, of Steppenwolf Ensemble members. Images on display are from Sandro’s latest book SANDRO RAW STEPPENWOLF.

While in the Loop last week, Saverio Truglia meet a young, 14 year old rapper who asked if he had a camera. Needing a picture and a video for You Tube, the kid could not have asked a better person. “I said to him, yes, I have a video camera. And ten minutes later, the little guy’s got a press kit. Just proves that all you’ve got to do is ask” said Saverio of the encounter.

Sandro – Solo Show and Artist Talk at Elgin Community College

Photographer and filmmaker Sandro will be giving an artist talk for his solo show, Provocative Imperfections, at Elgin Community College in the ATC Auditorium tomorrow, October 2, at 1pm. Opening reception will follow at 5:00pm at the Safety Kleen Gallery One.

Sandro, an alumnus of the college, will be exhibiting work from three different bodies of work. Massa, a black and white project of bodies against Plexiglas; Imagine Cuba, black and white tightly cropped portraits of Cuban citizens; Butts and Fronts, a study in color of figures in all shapes and size will all be on exhibit at the Safety Kleen Gallery One. Sandro’s films Joy Ride and Butterflies will also be shown. The exhibit will run from Tuesday,
October 2 through Saturday, November 3, 2012.

Sandro promotes Joy Ride at Nikon Photokina in Germany

Photographer and Director Sandro was recently at the Nikon Photokina Fair in Cologne, Germany to promote his action film Joy Ride. Along with the film’s Director of Photography Anthony Arendt, Sandro discussed how the film came together for Nikon using the new Nikon D800. With the camera’s high definition video option, the film was shot in the low lit streets of Chicago, creating a beautiful, soft focus film. Click here to watch Joy Ride. Saverio Truglia for Victory Gardens Theater

Saverio Truglia created the advertising image for the upcoming play Failure: A Love Story written by Philip Dawkins and directed by Seth Bockley. Victory Gardens describes, “Failure: A Love Story is a magical, musical fable that traces the sisters’ triumphs and defeats, lived out in the rickety two-story building by the Chicago River that was the Fail family home and clock shop.”

Creating a conceptual illumination of the play, Saverio’s period styled sepia image demonstrates the creative mindset needed to bring a theatrical concept to life via print photography long before the play’s actual production begins.
“It required historical research, vintage styling and magical illusions, all of
which I love” said Saverio of his recent shoot. Tickets are now on sale!

Photographer Mark Wiens created some fun and refreshing images for a promotional kit for Corona Familiar Beer. Using photography and silkscreens, Mark’s images were shown in test markets showcasing the specialty Corona label. Kits were available in taverns that came with 2 bottles of beer, an ice bucket, branded glasses and limes. Muy freea cervezas por favor!

Capturing local professional partiers, the Landan Twins, the current cover shows the bright, fun duo leaping in mid air while in mid party. For the double issue from June, Saverio creates a “High Anxiety” cover showing the stress and frustration of flight crews during summer vacation travel. Both images highlight Saverio’s style for upbeat, bright portraits.
